About the MCSL-223 assignment
The MCSL-223 assignment covers network simulation and data mining. Network tasks involve point-to-point links, multi-hop communication, path selection and broadcast traffic. Data mining tasks focus on K-Means clustering and Apriori association rules, using customer, student and transactional datasets.
There are two parts: Computer Networks has four questions worth 5 marks each, and Data Mining has two questions worth 10 marks each, with equal marks for their sub-parts. All questions are compulsory. The lab record carries 40 marks and the compulsory viva voce carries 20 marks, bringing the total to 100.
What the assignment asks
| Question | Marks | Topic |
|---|---|---|
| Part I — Q1 | 5 | Simulate four nodes linked point-to-point, configure IP addressing and the Internet stack, and verify packet delivery from Node 1 to Node 4. |
| Part I — Q2 | 5 | Build a six-node point-to-point network requiring at least three hops between source and destination, demonstrate delivery, and measure end-to-end delay and packet delivery. |
| Part I — Q3 | 5 | Compare route selection across two source-to-destination paths with different link delays or bandwidths, then change a link parameter and compare the outcomes. |
| Part I — Q4 | 5 | Simulate broadcasting in a seven-node network and compare transmission counts with a manually constructed logical spanning tree to assess redundant traffic. |
| Part II — Q1 | 10 | Create customer-purchase and student-performance datasets in CSV and ARFF formats, apply K-Means clustering, and assess the resulting clusters and chosen cluster counts. |
| Part II — Q2 | 10 | Apply Apriori to retail transactions and a WEKA market-basket dataset, interpret the patterns, and compare rules obtained with different support and confidence settings. |
This is a summary of each question. Download the official PDF above for the exact questions and word limits.
How to write and submit it
- Answer every question in both parts.
- Follow the assignment presentation guidelines in the MCA(New) Programme Guide and state any assumptions you make.
- You may use illustrations and diagrams to support your explanations.
- MCA_NEW students must submit to their Study Centre Coordinator, while MCAOL students must submit through the LMS portal by the applicable deadline.
- Timely assignment submission is required for eligibility to appear in the corresponding term-end examinations.
- For the term-end practical examination, meet the minimum attendance requirement as well as the assignment submission requirement.
- Attend the compulsory assignment viva voce; submitting the assignment without attending the viva results in zero marks and an incomplete assignment.
Submission dates: 31 October 2026 (July 2026 session; December TEE); 15 April 2027 (January 2027 session; June TEE).
Frequently asked questions
Which sessions does the MCSL-223 assignment cover?
It covers the July 2026 and January 2027 sessions for MCA_NEW and MCAOL. The listing provides it in English.
What are the MCSL-223 assignment submission deadlines?
The deadline is 31 October 2026 for the July 2026 session and December TEE, and 15 April 2027 for the January 2027 session and June TEE.
How are the 100 marks distributed?
Computer Networks carries 20 marks, Data Mining carries 20 marks, the lab record carries 40 marks, and the viva voce carries 20 marks. The assignment weightage is 30%.
Which software can be used for the practical tasks?
The network tasks may use an open-source network programming platform such as NS-3. The data mining tasks allow WEKA for clustering and specify WEKA for the market-basket Apriori exercise.
Is the MCSL-223 viva voce compulsory?
Yes. If you submit the assignment but do not attend the viva voce, the assignment is treated as incomplete and receives zero marks.
Where should I submit the MCSL-223 assignment?
MCA_NEW students must submit it to their Study Centre Coordinator. MCAOL students must submit it on the LMS portal.
