About the MCS-221 assignment
The MCS-221 assignment covers data warehouse planning, architecture, dimensional modelling, ETL and OLAP. It also examines data preprocessing, association rules, classification, clustering and emerging technologies through university, healthcare, retail and financial-sector scenarios.
There are ten compulsory questions worth 8 marks each, making 80 marks for the written work. The remaining 20 marks are for a compulsory viva voce. Students may use illustrations and diagrams to support their explanations.
What the assignment asks
| Question | Marks | Topic |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | 8 | Explain the purpose and characteristics of a university data warehouse and justify a choice between the Inmon and Kimball approaches. |
| Q2 | 8 | Illustrate a three-tier healthcare data warehouse architecture and explain the functions of its main components. |
| Q3 | 8 | Design and justify a dimensional model for supermarket analysis, specifying facts, dimensions, measures and a suitable schema. |
| Q4 | 8 | Describe ETL for combining e-commerce, ERP and CRM data, including data quality problems and transformation methods. |
| Q5 | 8 | Compare OLTP with OLAP and explain how major OLAP operations support management decisions. |
| Q6 | 8 | Explain preprocessing methods for preparing noisy, incomplete and inconsistent financial customer data for mining. |
| Q7 | 8 | Use a sample transaction dataset to explain association rule mining, Apriori and the interpretation of support, confidence and lift. |
| Q8 | 8 | Compare four classification algorithms and justify a suitable choice for credit-risk prediction. |
| Q9 | 8 | Distinguish major clustering approaches and compare K-means and DBSCAN for practical applications involving noisy data. |
| Q10 | 8 | Discuss emerging warehouse and mining technologies and explain their contribution to business intelligence. |
This is a summary of each question. Download the official PDF above for the exact questions and word limits.
How to write and submit it
- Attempt all ten questions; there is no choice.
- Attend the compulsory viva voce: submitting the assignment without attending it results in zero marks and an incomplete assignment.
- MCA_NEW students must submit their assignment to the Coordinator of their Study Centre by the deadline.
- MCAOL students must submit their assignment through the LMS Portal by the deadline.
- Submit on time to be eligible for the corresponding term-end examination.
- Illustrations and diagrams may be included to support explanations.
- Follow the assignment guidelines in the Programme Guide.
Submission dates: 15 April 2027 (June TEE; January 2027 session); 31 October 2026 (December TEE; July 2026 session).
