About the MCS-220 assignment
The MCS-220 Web Technologies assignment covers Java web application architecture, Servlets, JSP, HTTP communication and database access. It also examines Spring frameworks, Hibernate, application security, testing, exception handling and logging, ending with a Spring Boot library management application design.
There are nine compulsory questions carrying 80 marks, with another 20 marks reserved for a compulsory viva voce. Several questions have two parts. Students must explain concepts, compare technologies, write programs and develop application designs, using diagrams, flowcharts, code snippets and illustrations where appropriate.
What the assignment asks
| Question | Marks | Topic |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 (a) | 5 | Explain design patterns, web applications, servlet containers, JSP and dependency injection through suitable examples. |
| Q1 (b) | 5 | Describe the responsibilities of the presentation, business, persistence and database layers in a modern Java web application. |
| Q2 (a) | 5 | Illustrate the Servlet life cycle and explain the purpose of its life-cycle methods. |
| Q2 (b) | 5 | Explain HTTP request-response communication and the exchange of parameters, headers and cookies between clients and servers. |
| Q3 (a) | 5 | Write and explain a JSP program that accepts two numbers and displays their greatest common divisor. |
| Q3 (b) | 5 | Create a Servlet program that receives employee information from an HTML form and displays it on a separate web page. |
| Q4 | 5 | Explain JDBC connectivity for a university registration application, including connection setup, SQL execution and exception handling. |
| Q5 | 5 | Compare Spring MVC and Spring Boot across architecture, configuration, deployment, scalability and development effort, identifying suitable uses for each. |
| Q6 (a) | 5 | Compare Hibernate and JDBC in terms of benefits, limitations and appropriate database application scenarios. |
| Q6 (b) | 5 | Use examples to explain how Spring Data JPA simplifies database development compared with traditional DAO implementations. |
| Q7 | 10 | Evaluate Spring Security mechanisms and justify a security strategy for a banking application covering authentication, authorization, password encoding and session management. |
| Q8 (a) | 5 | Assess the importance of web application testing and the contributions of unit, integration and security testing to application quality. |
| Q8 (b) | 5 | Discuss exception handling and logging in enterprise web applications, including their role in maintenance and debugging. |
| Q9 | 10 | Design a Spring Boot library management application with MVC architecture, entity relationships, repository-service-controller components, book and user CRUD operations, Spring Security login and an explained workflow. |

How to write and submit it
- Attempt all nine questions.
- Include suitable diagrams, flowcharts, code snippets and illustrations wherever they help explain your work.
- Follow the assignment guidelines in the Programme Guide.
- MCA_NEW students must submit their assignments to the Coordinator of their Study Centre by the applicable deadline.
- MCAOL students must submit their assignments through the LMS Portal by the applicable deadline.
- Timely assignment submission is compulsory for eligibility to appear in the corresponding term-end examination.
- Attend the compulsory assignment viva voce; submitting the assignment without attending the viva results in the assignment being treated as incomplete and awarded zero.
Submission dates: 15 April 2027 (June term-end exam; January 2027 session); 31 October 2026 (December term-end exam; July 2026 session).
