Detailed Syllabus

About the syllabus update

GSSSB has released the syllabus for Food Safety Officer, Class-3 recruitment in Gujarat's Health and Family Welfare Department. The update covers Advertisement Nos. 465/2026-27 and 466/2026-27, with 90 vacancies comprising 84 regular posts and 6 PwBD special recruitment posts. Candidates must refer to the syllabus document corresponding to their advertisement.

Examination structure and qualifying rules

The single-stage competitive examination will use CBRT or OMR mode. Candidates will answer 210 objective multiple-choice questions carrying 210 marks within 3 hours, or 180 minutes. Part A accounts for 90 marks and Part B for 120 marks. Each incorrect response loses one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question, equivalent to 0.25 marks for a one-mark question.

The qualifying requirement is 40% separately in each part: at least 36 marks in Part A and 48 in Part B. An overall score of 84 is insufficient if either individual threshold is missed. Clearing these thresholds does not guarantee selection; merit, eligibility, vacancies and applicable recruitment rules also determine the outcome.

Part A: general subjects

Reasoning and Data Interpretation and Quantitative Aptitude carry 30 marks each. The Constitution of India and Current Affairs carry 10 marks each. Comprehension contributes another 10 marks, split equally between Gujarati and English.

Reasoning includes series, coding, relationships, directions, logical conclusions and interpretation of tables or graphs. Quantitative topics include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, mensuration and trigonometry. Constitutional coverage includes rights, duties, government institutions and elections, while current affairs includes Gujarat, national and international developments.

Part B: technical weightage

The 120-mark technical section is distributed as follows:

  • Food Laws, Regulations, Certification and Development Schemes: 30 marks.
  • Introduction to Basic Food Science: 20 marks.
  • Food Microbiology and Food Biotechnology: 15 marks.
  • Food Safety, Quality Control, Hygiene and Standards: 15 marks.
  • Dairy Science and Food Processing Technology: 10 marks each.
  • Food and Nutrition; Food Preservation, Packaging and Storage; Agricultural Science; and Animal Product Processing: 5 marks each.

Technical coverage includes the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, FSSAI, licensing, labelling, BIS, AGMARK and Codex Alimentarius. Other areas include food chemistry, microorganisms, nutrition, preservation, hygiene, HACCP, sampling, dairy processing and food-processing operations.

What candidates should do now

Open the official GSSSB website, locate the syllabus for the relevant advertisement and download it. Check the prescribed coverage and unit weightage before organising preparation. Treat the official PDF as the final authority for topic coverage, and follow the examination instructions for unanswered questions and other response options.
