More Information
About the Scheme
PM-Vidyalaxmi is run by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, with Canara Bank as the nodal bank. Its purpose is to make sure that financial constraints do not stop any meritorious young person in India from pursuing quality higher education. The whole process, from registration to the loan application and the interest subvention claim, is digital and runs on the PM-Vidyalaxmi portal.
Key Benefits Explained
The scheme offers a special education loan without collateral or a guarantor. The loan amount follows the actual cost of study, covering the course fee and expenses such as mess, hostel fee, refundable and non-refundable fees, a laptop and living expenses, with no upper limit. Interest is capped at the lending bank's EBLR plus 0.5%, and servicing the interest during the study and moratorium periods can earn up to 1% additional concession. Repayment can stretch to 15 years after the moratorium. Two government supports sit on top of the loan: a 75% credit guarantee on loans up to ₹7,50,000 for every student regardless of income, and a 3% interest subvention on loans up to ₹10,00,000 during the moratorium for families earning up to ₹8,00,000 a year. Students with family income up to ₹4,50,000 in technical/professional courses already get full interest subvention under PM-USP CSIS.
Who Should Apply and Who Cannot
The deciding factor is the institution and the route of admission. Only merit-based admissions to the designated QHEIs count: top-100 NIRF-ranked HEIs, top-200 NIRF-ranked State/UT government HEIs, and all other HEIs under the Government of India. Management-quota admissions, students already receiving another government scholarship, interest subvention or fee reimbursement, and foreign institutions or their campuses are outside the scheme. The subvention and guarantee can be used only once, for one undergraduate, postgraduate or integrated course, and continuing subvention from the 2nd year needs satisfactory academic performance.
