More Information
About the Scheme
Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan is a contributory pension scheme of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. It aims to ensure old-age protection for unorganised workers. The worker pays an age-specific monthly contribution, the Central Government adds an equal amount, and from the age of 60 the worker receives a minimum assured pension of ₹3,000 every month. Life Insurance Corporation of India manages the fund.
Key Benefits Explained
- The government's matching contribution doubles what goes into your pension account each month.
- Your spouse is protected: if you die while drawing pension, your spouse receives 50% of it as family pension.
- If you die before 60 after paying regularly, your spouse can either continue the scheme by paying the contributions or exit and receive your contribution back with interest.
- Exit rules depend on how long you stayed. Leaving within less than 10 years returns only your share with savings bank interest; leaving after 10 years or more, but before 60, returns your share with the interest earned by the fund or savings bank interest, whichever is higher.
- Any exit, voluntary or involuntary, is allowed only after three years from the date of enrolment.
Who Should Apply and Who Cannot
The scheme suits unorganised workers aged 18 to 40 at entry who earn ₹15,000 a month or less, including construction workers, domestic workers, cobblers, home-based workers, rickshaw pullers and agricultural labourers. No educational qualification is needed. Being enrolled in Atal Pension Yojana, or receiving benefits under a state scheme for unorganised workers, does not bar you. However, income tax payers, people working in the organised sector, and members of EPFO, NPS, ESIC or the NPS-Traders scheme cannot join.
Applying: Practical Points
- Keep your Aadhaar card, savings bank or Jan Dhan account passbook (with IFSC) and a working mobile number ready before going to the CSC.
