About the MCH-019 assignment
The MCH-019 assignment covers all four course blocks. Topics include green synthesis, atom economy, catalysts, chemical toxicity, atmospheric pollution, climate change, renewable feedstocks, marine antifouling and PET production.
There is one tutor-marked assignment containing 20 compulsory questions worth 5 marks each, for a total of 100 marks. It carries 30% weightage in continuous evaluation, and students need 40% to pass the assignment. The booklet states that it is valid from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.
What the assignment asks
| Question | Marks | Topic |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | 5 | Identify the recipients of the 2001 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and describe the research recognised. |
| Q2 | 5 | Explain ozone depletion, identify the chemicals responsible and define atom economy. |
| Q3 | 5 | Describe ways to modify the structure of a target molecule during synthesis planning. |
| Q4 | 5 | Outline precautions required when using transition-metal catalysts. |
| Q5 | 5 | Describe methods used to purify chemical compounds. |
| Q6 | 5 | Explain methods for reducing bioavailability. |
| Q7 | 5 | Explain why the toxicity of chemicals to animals and wildlife requires research. |
| Q8 | 5 | Explain acid rain, distinguish it from normal rainwater and describe atmospheric sulfuric acid formation. |
| Q9 | 5 | Define global climate change, distinguish it from global warming and explain the role of carbon dioxide. |
| Q10 | 5 | Discuss evidence supporting global climate change. |
| Q11 | 5 | Explain the significance of atom economy in the green synthesis of ibuprofen. |
| Q12 | 5 | Identify volatile organic compounds used as industrial solvents and provide examples. |
| Q13 | 5 | Discuss green chemistry principles and the use of microorganisms as environmentally benign catalysts. |
| Q14 | 5 | Describe the main stages of marine biofouling. |
| Q15 | 5 | Explain the meaning of a safe marine antifoulant. |
| Q16 | 5 | Explain the importance of renewable feedstocks in green chemistry using examples. |
| Q17 | 5 | Discuss the limitations of using carbon dioxide as a blowing agent. |
| Q18 | 5 | Identify commercial names for PET and the monomers used to produce it. |
| Q19 | 5 | Identify and draw the intermediate formed when PET is synthesised from dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol. |
| Q20 | 5 | Identify the by-product of the reaction between dimethyl terephthalate and ethylene glycol and explain how it forms. |

How to write and submit it
- Follow the prescribed first-page format, including enrolment number, name, address, course code, course title, assignment number, study centre and date.
- Use foolscap-size writing paper that is not very thin.
- Leave margins of 4 cm on the left, top and bottom of each answer sheet.
- Keep answers precise and attempt every question; the general instructions also require completion of both Part A and Part B.
- Submit the complete answer sheets to your Study Centre by the applicable deadline; late submissions are not accepted.
- Keep a copy of your submitted answer sheets, as recommended in the booklet.
- Submit the assignment before filling in the examination form for this course.
- The booklet is valid from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027; if you fail it or do not submit it by June 2027, obtain the assignment for 2027 and follow the Programme Guide.
Submission dates: 31 March 2027 (June term-end exam); 30 September 2026 (December term-end exam). Dates can differ by session.
Frequently asked questions
What are the submission deadlines for the MCH-019 assignment?
The official listing gives 31 March 2027 for the June term-end exam and 30 September 2026 for the December term-end exam. Dates can differ by session.
How many questions must I attempt in MCH-019?
All 20 questions are compulsory. Each carries 5 marks, making a total of 100 marks.
What are the assignment weightage and passing marks?
The assignment carries 30% weightage in continuous evaluation. The booklet requires 40% to pass, equivalent to 40 out of 100 marks.
Why does the MCH-019 PDF show an MCH-011 assignment code?
The booklet cover identifies MCH-019 as Green Chemistry, and the question page explicitly gives Course Code: MCH-019. However, that page also prints the heading MCH-011: Inorganic Chemistry 1 and Assignment Code: MCH-011/TMA/2026-27. The PDF does not explain this inconsistency.
Where should I submit the MCH-019 assignment?
Submit the complete answer sheets to your Study Centre within the deadline. The booklet says late answer sheets will not be accepted and recommends retaining a copy.
Must I submit the assignment before filling in the examination form?
Yes. The booklet states that submission is compulsory before filling in the term-end examination form for this course.
