About the MCHE-015 assignment
The MCHE-015 assignment covers both course blocks, combining advanced reaction kinetics with electrochemistry. Topics include reaction mechanisms, steady-state approximations, photochemistry, oscillatory and solid-state reactions, electron transfer, electrode kinetics, electrochemical techniques, corrosion, fuel cells and energy-storage devices.
This tutor-marked assignment has 10 main questions combining brief explanations, derivations, comparisons and numerical problems. Attempt every main question, choosing any five brief-answer items in Questions 1 and 6. The assignment carries 100 marks and contributes 30% to continuous evaluation. A score of 40% is required to pass the assignment.
What the assignment asks
| Question | Marks | Topic |
|---|---|---|
| Question 1 | 2 × 5 = 10 | Choose five brief-answer topics from steady-state approximation, parallel and consecutive reactions, photochemical equivalence, induction periods, autocatalysis, the Lotka–Volterra model and Wagner’s solid-state reaction mechanisms. |
| Question 2 | 5; 5 | Derive the apparent activation energy for three parallel reactions and obtain an initial enzyme-catalysis rate law using the steady-state approximation. |
| Question 3 | 5; 5 | Explain the molecular interpretation of the Arrhenius equation and derive the specified rate law for hydrogen peroxide photodecomposition in the presence of carbon monoxide. |
| Question 4 | 5; 5 | Discuss the mechanism and intermediates of the Belousov–Zhabotinskii reaction, then compare diffusion-controlled and interface-controlled solid-state reaction kinetics. |
| Question 5 | 5; 5 | Compare inner-sphere and outer-sphere electron transfer using Marcus theory, and calculate product yield and concentration for parallel first-order reactions. |
| Question 6 | 2 × 5 = 10 | Choose five brief-answer topics from Tafel slopes, overpotential, electrocrystallisation, corrosion factors, fuel-cell efficiency, charge-transfer resistance and hydrogen-evolution electrocatalysts. |
