• A Master's degree in engineering with 10 years of relevant experience, a Master's degree in science with 15 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. with 3 years of relevant experience is required.
• Only relevant experience acquired after the minimum qualifying degree will count. Eligibility is assessed as on 12 November 2026.
• Candidates need hands-on fabrication-process and equipment experience, including areas such as lithography, deposition, etching, thermal processing or metrology.
• Required capabilities include cleanroom safety, SOP implementation, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, staff and user coordination, technical documentation, and proficiency in spreadsheets and reporting tools.
• An additional advantage is 3–5 years of relevant, exclusive semiconductor nanofabrication cleanroom experience. Experience supporting or managing a shared research or fabrication facility is also preferred.
• Indian citizens are eligible. Subjects of Nepal and persons who migrated from Pakistan intending to settle permanently in India require a Government of India eligibility certificate applied for through the Ministry of Home Affairs.
• Minimum qualifications and/or experience may be relaxed for exceptionally outstanding candidates. The institute may relax experience requirements for SC/ST candidates if sufficient candidates with the prescribed experience are unlikely to apply.

Role and appointment terms

IIT Madras IC&SR has announced one Principal Project Officer vacancy through advertisement ICSR/PR/Advt. 225/2026, dated 29 October 2026. The position is attached to the Department of Electrical Engineering, with Prof. Shanti Bhattacharya as co-ordinator. It is based at IIT Madras, Chennai, and carries pay of Rs.1,20,000/- to Rs.1,50,000/-. The initial contract is for one year, with further extension dependent on performance. It does not confer a claim to permanent employment or regularisation.

Experience and responsibilities

The officer will support the daily technical and operational management of a shared nanofabrication facility used by faculty, MS/PhD students and other users. Responsibilities cover equipment scheduling, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, vendor coordination, cleanroom safety, user training and technical records. The role also involves procurement documentation, usage and inventory records, progress reporting and coordination with project and administrative teams.

Applicants must meet one of the three degree-and-experience routes: an engineering Master's with 10 years of experience, a science Master's with 15 years, or a Ph.D. with 3 years. Only relevant post-qualification experience counts. Exclusive semiconductor cleanroom experience of 3–5 years and shared-facility management experience are preferred rather than mandatory.
