About the MCS-023 assignment
The MCS-023 assignment covers database models, data independence, keys, normalization, transaction scheduling, recovery, security and SQL. It also includes database design for a smart hospital, queries on a banking database, and analysis of functional dependencies and concurrency.
There are four compulsory questions carrying 80 marks, with another 20 marks reserved for viva voce. Q1 carries 40 marks, Q2 carries 20 marks, and Q3 and Q4 carry 10 marks each. Tasks include explanations, comparisons, SQL queries, an ER diagram, BCNF decomposition and precedence graphs.
What the assignment asks
| Question | Marks | Topic |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | 4 Marks each for (a)–(h); 2 Marks each = | Compare database models and architectures, explain abstraction, keys, serializability, normalization, recovery and security, and demonstrate the specified SQL commands and clauses. |
| Q2 | 10+10 | Identify the entities, attributes, relationships and constraints of a smart hospital system, then draw its ER diagram with keys, cardinalities, participation constraints and suitable assumptions. |
| Q3 | 2 Marks each = 10 Marks | Write five SQL queries on the supplied banking schema to retrieve customers by balance, branch membership and loan status, count customers by branch, and identify the branch with the highest deposits. |
| Q4 | 6+4 | Find candidate keys and assess and decompose a relation into BCNF, then analyse the given transaction schedule using a precedence graph, serializability checks and concurrency-problem identification. |
This is a summary of each question. Download the official PDF above for the exact questions and word limits.
How to write and submit it
- Answer all four questions.
- Use suitable illustrations, diagrams and examples wherever needed.
- For the hospital ER diagram, show primary keys, relationship names, cardinalities and participation constraints, and state any necessary assumptions.
