About the MCS-012 assignment
The MCS-012 assignment covers instruction execution, number representations, digital logic, memory organisation, input/output, processor architecture and 8086 assembly programming. It includes numerical problems, circuit and system diagrams, explanations, and a programming task.
There are four main questions with several subparts, carrying 80 marks altogether, plus a 20-mark viva voce. Answers to each part should generally stay within about 300 words. Q2(f) specifies a shorter limit of 50 words for each item. The PDF prints 25% weightage, while the official listing gives 30%.
What the assignment asks
| Question | Marks | Topic |
|---|---|---|
| Q1 | — | Trace machine states during instruction execution, convert number and text representations, simplify a Boolean function, analyse digital circuits and error correction, and represent values in IEEE 754 formats. |
| Q2 | — | Explain RAM organisation, map a memory address using three cache methods, discuss interrupts and DMA, illustrate file allocation with FAT entries, and describe selected storage and peripheral technologies. |
| Q3 | — | Design instruction formats and execution micro-operations, evaluate register operations, illustrate instruction pipelining and branch issues, and explain micro-instruction formats and RISC architecture. |
| Q4 | — | Write a commented 8086 program to display a stored single-digit binary value as an ASCII digit, explain procedure calls and stack parameters, and discuss segment addressing, flags and specified instructions. |
This is a summary of each question. Download the official PDF above for the exact questions and word limits.
How to write and submit it
